Portland, ME stripers

Fished at a place called Higgins Beach this a.m Got there a little later than I should have I think. I'm trying to figure out the timing on the tides. I did catch one 10" mackerel on a mackerel fly. Apparently mackerel are like brown trout... they eat their own.

Re: Portland, ME stripers

One day was all I made it our for while in ME. We decided to take off a little earlier that we had originally planned.

On our way back to Toledo we took a detour through northern MA and ended up in Greenfield, MA for a few nights.
While there I fished the Deerfield River for trout. There are LOTS of trout streams in northwest MA, wild and stocked. Unfortunately the Deerfield is mostly, if not all, stockers but at the same time, fortunately the stockers are all in the 12-16" range and fish over 20" are common. The area I fished was a whitewater rafting area and I managed to time it right and while I saw a lot of rafts, they were done by the time I got in the river.
I caught some rainbows in that 12-16" range and hooked one of the big guys who promptly broke me off with a run downstream. I took my 4wt. that day not knowing the type of water I'd be fishing. Had I known that I was going to be fishing that fast of water I would've taken my 6wt. Up to that point all of the Deerfield that I had seen was just gentle riffles and flats not the fast, boulder strewn stuff that I actually fished.
I fished streamers and the only fly I caught fish on was the Don King. Check the Fly Tying page for tying instructions.

El Pres;

I've heard of the deerfield before.  Sounds like it was fun.  Sorry you didn't get to stripper fish much.  I leave on the 19th for Conn.  Do you have a few flies I can borrow for the trip?  Also can I use neoprene waders in salt water without ruining them.

Yes, I have some flies you can borrow. I would think that you can use the neoprenes in the salt. I will say that ANYTHING you use there will have to be thouroughly rinsed in fresh water daily. That reminds me that I should check all the stuff I used and make sure that I rinsed it enough. What part of town are you in? Next week will probably be best to meet and get you some stuff.
